I search post: Why did Huxley give characters certain names

While reading through the book and discussing it in discussions a important part of the book that came up was the naming of the characters. Names like Bernard Marx or Mustapha Mond stand out. My self I found Mustapha Mond to be a interesting name because in french “monde” means world, but as that is that just means that it implies that he controls the world which the reader already knows as he is the “world controller”.  Bernard Marx is a more recognizable name that I think stands for Karl Marx who is famous for popularizing communism. By reading the pre-word written by Huxley years after the original publishing of the book he made it clear that he did not like most form of modern government. The pre-word written in the sixties during the cold war now warned of society evolving into the society in Brave new world or it could be individual nations threatening each other with nuclear bombs. A key thing that I would note about the time that the book was written is that it was written during the times of the rise of Facism and Communism. These forms of government shared many of the characteristics of the “world state” in brave new world. I believe that Huxley quite clearly demonstrates that he believes that nothing good can come of civilisation and the eventual state that he believed it would reach is demonstrated in brave new world. Huxley named the characters in the book to relate their actions and situations to the real world to give the reader some parallels to the authors criticisms of modern society. The naming of the characters in this story serves to demonstrate relationships between the real world and brave new world giving the reader better understanding of the book and Huxley many messages written into it.

Communication

Last friday in digital media I took part in a lesson on communication. In this lesson we had a group discussion on: What is communication?, What are tools to communicate?, Why do we communicate? and What is effective communication.

I decided that effective communication (between people) is about taking what you have in your head (a feeling, thought…)  and putting it in the head of another person. The reason that this lesson was important because it helped me think about communication, which is a important topic for people as our society relies so much on effective communication.

I think the lesson was really well done and I liked the ability to discuss and agree on things as a group. I would like to see that again in future lessons.

what would I share?

I personally do not like to put anything on the internet but if i had to improve my webblog about removing items from the internet I would do the following: and some examples, some information on the subject, some links to other related resources and a couple how to videos.

Investing update

I will be changing my investing strategy to a more long term buy&hold strategy. I am disappointed because i had chosen good stocks but did not hold on to them for long enough if i had wait two more weeks i would have made 30% compared to 3%. I will hold onto a stock now for at least a month unless it is doing incredibly bad.

Copyrights & intellectual property

Today I learned about copyrights for digital media. It is interesting to learn how the whole copyright system works. I found it interesting that all you really need to do to use anyones IP[intellectual property] is to acknowledge them as long as it is non profit.

I so far have not used very much that goes beyond what the average person would do involving copyrights but it is useful information to know for the future.

Three most trusted websites

My three most trusted websites. Are wikipedia, google finance [not everything], google maps. I use wikipedia often and most of the time do not double check information. Google finance I trust for stock market information. However the news google finance provides is not reliable and iIignore it. Google  maps is my most trusted website by far and is my main website for travel information.

Cool math

I was working on a problem where you have to find the biggest palindrome that you can as long as it is between 10-99. After i found that 89 was a good palindrome I let other people actually find out how long it would go on[ It turned out be 24]. I started think about if the number was prime of if it’s square root would have any effect on it. Then while randomly thinking i found the if you took a number like 19 added it with its palindrome to get   110 then I take 19 or 91 and add 9 to 1 or 1 to 9 to get 10. Then i take 110 and divide it by 1o to get 11. You will get 11 for every number under 100 i have not had much success from numbers over 100.

Main character of my book.

Please write the question at the top of your post

Could you be friends with a protagonist of your novel? give three examples

I believe that there is a good chance I could be friends with the protagonist in my novel Maurice but it would be incredibly difficult to do. Even though Maurice is a cat he is quite intelligent because of eating some sort of weird substance and has some human friends in the story so i believe it would be possible to become friends. In the book maurice is friends with a group of intelligent rodents and some humans.

Maurice would be a good friend to have if you met him at the end of the book but at the start of the book he was manipulative and greedy and just used people for his own gain. Even if i became friends with him it would not be a good deal for me probably ending with me being scammed in some way. At the start of the book Maurice’s only goal is to gather enough money retire in a nice home. he gets this money by scamming entire villages out of their money. However at the end of the book he realises it is better just to become part of the town and that family and friends is more important than his goal to retire in some nice house.

Now To actually become friends with Maurice. To really become friends with Maurice you have to find a way to earn his trust. In the book the only way that any one could  earn his trust was by always showing great care towards him even and realiseing he is actually a good person and will just do anything to help his family/friends.

Ultimately Maurice is quite hard to befriend but if you are one of the lucky few who manage to become friends with him are a much valued part of his life and are loyally protected and helped when in trouble. Going back to my thesis you certainly could become friends with Maurice but it would take a lot of time and effort but it most certainly would be worth it.
